The impact of dams, power stations, and irrigation projects in neighboring Turkey and Iran has been drastic: The water flowing into Iraq has dropped by almost 50 percent on the Euphrates and by 33 percent on the Tigris since major dam building began in the 1970s, according to statistics from Iraq?s Water Ministry. PAR428257 On December 26, 1999, hurricane LOTHAR swept through France with winds of over 200 km/h. It caused a great amount of damage to buildings (roofs blown off, flooding) and power failures that, in some areas, lasted for three weeks. Many trees were also knocked down. In a single night, the equivalent of a three-year tree harvest was knocked down (300 million trees). Though the ecological impact appears to be relatively modest, provided that these trees are removed from the forests where they have fallen, the economic impact will be heavy. 500,000 hectares of forest damaged by the storm must now be replanted. This will require a huge effort, and the works to be executed over the next ten years will cost an estimated 6 billion French francs. It will also be necessary to stockpile and market millions of uprooted trees. Moreover, the introduction on the market of 140 million cubic metres of wood will cause a drastic drop in prices without a corresponding increase in demand, since the market cannot expand any further.
